QM+ General Standard 2: Learning Objectives
Learning objectives describe what learners will be able to do upon completion of the course.
- QM 2.1 The course-level learning objectives describe outcomes that are measurable. (Essential) — Creating measurable course-level learning objectives is a fundamental principle in educational design, particularly in aligning course content, activities, and assessments effectively. Measurable objectives make clear to students and instructors the expected course outcomes. When objectives are measurable, it's easier to design assessments that accurately evaluate whether those objectives have been met.
- QM 2.2 The module/unit-level learning objectives describe outcomes that are measurable and consistent with the course-level objectives. (Essential) — Having module or unit-level learning objectives that are measurable and consistent with course-level objectives guarantees that each module or unit contributes directly to the overall course goals. It also allows for a more effective assessment of student progress, and students can better understand the purpose of each module and how it fits within the larger framework. A helpful tool is an alignment table, where module objectives are matched with course level objectives.
- QM 2.3 Learning objectives are clearly stated, are learner-centered, and are prominently located in the course. (Essential) — Clearly articulated objectives inform students about what they are expected to learn and achieve by the end of the course. This clarity helps students focus their efforts and understand the purpose behind course activities and assessments. When objectives are centered around learners' needs and interests, students are more likely to be engaged and motivated. Placing learning objectives prominently at the beginning of the course materials (such as the syllabus, course website, or module introduct
- QM 2.4 The relationship between learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments is made clear. (Essential) — The clear articulation of the relationship between learning objectives, activities, and assessments is essential for creating meaningful, coherent, and effective learning experiences. This alignment is key to ensuring that educational efforts are purposefully directed towards achieving defined learning outcomes, enhancing the quality of education and student success. It serves as a cornerstone of best practices in teaching and learning, promoting an integrated approach to course design and deli
- QM 2.5 The learning objectives are suited to and reflect the level of the course. (Essential) — Type or paste something here to turn it into an excerpt.By aligning objectives with the course level, educators can design curricula that systematically build on students' existing knowledge and skills, ensuring a cohesive learning progression across a program. Objectives that reflect the course level help maintain a high standard of academic rigor, ensuring that students are pushed to engage deeply with the material in a way that is appropriate to their stage in the academic program.
