Trigger Warnings: Suggested Language

This article provides templated language that can be used to incorporate trigger warnings into course syllabi, reading lists, videos, or before specific classes or discussions. Trigger warnings can help create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

What are Trigger Warnings?

These warnings are intended to prepare or alert students about potentially sensitive material that may evoke strong reactions due to personal experiences, such as violence, abuse, discrimination, or trauma.

For example, a military veteran who experiences PTSD may appreciate a trigger warning about a video, reading, or other content that depicts violence or war.

The concept behind trigger warnings is to foster an inclusive and supportive educational setting by acknowledging students' diverse backgrounds and experiences.

In practice, trigger warnings can take various forms, such as verbal announcements before a lecture, written notices in syllabi, or alerts before showing graphic content. They are not intended to prevent the discussion or study of challenging topics but rather to enable students to engage with the material in a way that considers their well-being. While trigger warnings are widely debated, proponents argue they contribute to a compassionate and empathetic academic environment.

Decide Whether or Not to Offer Alternatives

In some courses, offering alternatives to potentially triggering content may not be feasible. However, providing a trigger warning can still be valuable.

If feasible, you may consider offering alternatives for students who might need to avoid certain materials. This helps ensure that all students can participate meaningfully in the course while feeling respected and safe.
