Using Panopto in Video Discussions

To complete a video discussion, you can follow the steps in the How to use Panopto to Record a Basic Video in Canvas or the text below:

  1. Go to the Discussion Board

  2. Select Reply

  3. Locate and select the Panopto Icon in the toolbar

  4. Select Record

  5. Select Browser (you can use the app, but Browser is the preferred method)

    • The web browser needs access to the Microphone and Camera, if prompted, allow access

    • If you are on Mac and are not prompted, you can go to Settings > Privacy & Security. From there you can click Microphone/Camera and enable it for your preferred web browser.

  6. Select the record button when you are ready to record

  7. Rename the title of the video to the instructor's preferred naming convention, and select the location “My Folder

  8. Once you have renamed the video, go back to the Canvas Discussion tab/page and then select Insert

  9. After the video is inserted, select Reply to finish

  10. To submit a reply: follow all of the previous steps after clicking Reply to the desired discussion you are replying to

Note: the steps above are only available on desktop. You won’t be able to use mobile devices to record a video for Panopto Discussions.

Important Information

  • All Panopto-recorded videos will be automatically captioned.

  • If you redo a video when in the recording tab, the Panopto Video popout may not see the new recording. You will need to close the popout and reopen Panopto from the toolbar. From there, you can find your previous video in the “Choose” tab.
