Annotation-based assignments can be beneficial for both teachers and students.
For teachers, these assignments provide a window into students' thought processes, allowing for targeted feedback and understanding of how students engage with the material.
For students, annotation encourages active reading, deepens comprehension, and promotes critical thinking by requiring them to engage directly with the text.
Annotation-based Assignments can foster a collaborative learning environment, as students can share and discuss their annotations, enhancing peer learning and building a stronger community of inquiry.
There are two types of Annotation Assignments that are used at Boise State University:

Perusall | This a third party tool that offers free usage to their Annotation Software with specific resources. It can be be integrated with your Canvas Course, including with grading. Canvas Annotation Assignment | The Canvas Annotation Assignment is a native tool that exists in Canvas, no integration required. | Assignments can only be set up individually, students cannot work on an Annotation Assignment as a team. |
