This article explains what Canvas Banners are, provides resources for free ones that were already created for Boise State, and includes instructions on how to Add, Change, and Remove Banners from Canvas.

Instructions

What is a Banner?

In Canvas, faculty can embed Images in their content. An example of a Banner is an image that is set to a specific length and width that is embedded at the top of the Canvas Page. This could be something that is a Welcome Message, introduces Content, or even just introduces the Course. Here is an example of a banner that might be used in a science course:

How can I create a new Banner for my Course?

How do I embed a Banner in my Canvas Course?

  • Go to the Canvas Course you wish to edit.

  • In the Course Layout menu, select the Home or Pages. Locate the Front Page / Page you want to use as the Home Page.

  • Select on the Edit button.

  • Banners are usually located at the top of the page, select where you would like to embed the image on the page with your cursor.

  • Select the Image button from the Rich Content Editor or select Insert from the menu.

    • Insert → Image → Upload Image → choose the image from your computer

  • Select the image file from your computer. Select Upload, your image should now appear.

  • Be sure to click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.

Considerations:

  • Accepted banner images include JPG, JPEG, and PNG files.

  • Very large images are not recommended; at best they can be disorienting and at worse they can be an impediment.

  • Images that are much wider horizontally than they are tall tend to work best for course site banners.

How do I remove a Banner/Header Image from my Canvas Course?

  • Select the image you want to remove.

  • Click “Delete” from your keyboard, this will make the image disappear.

  • Be sure to click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.
