This article covers how academic administrators (e.g., chairs, deans, coordinators or other support personnel) can request elevated access in Canvas. Elevated access in Canvas may be necessary, for example, when administrators require access to manage all online courses for their program or department.

If you require access to a past course or courses you haven’t taught, follow the steps outlined in the Requesting Access to Past Canvas Courses article.

Processing completed requests may take up to a week.

Instructions

Complete and submit the request form for elevated access in Canvas.

Considerations

Historically, s_accounts were used as a mechanism for student employees to retain their normal student roles in Canvas or other systems.

Effective Jan 2025, s_accounts are the default mechamism for any employee who requires elevated Canvas access because these accounts are auto-deprovisioned upon separation from the university.

  1. Supervisor approval is required.

  2. The process may take up to a week to complete.

  3. An email will be sent when

    1. The employee s_account is created.

    2. The employee access is granted in Canvas.
