Summary:

This article explains how instructors can set up their own Canvas assessments to require the use of ProctorU Record+ (the automated record and review product from ProctorU).

Exams do not need to be finalized before you set up Record+. An empty Canvas Quiz can be configured with ProctorU. Questions can be added to exams any time before the start date.

First Time User Setup

  1. If you do not already have one, create a ProctorU instructor account using your Boise State faculty email. If you need to regain access to an old account, try signing in at the portal or using the password reset option.

  2. Install the ProctorU Google Chrome Extension (recommended) or Firefox Extension. Other browsers are not currently supported.

  3. After Installing, click the ProcotrU extension icon in your browser, then click Login.

  4. On the web portal, enter your instructor credentials, enable the Stay Signed In option, then click Login.

  5. Close the ProctorU tab and return to Canvas to set up your exam.

Adding ProctorU Record+ to your Exam

  1. After you have installed the ProctorU extension and signed in with your instructor account, click the intended quiz in Canvas, then click the Edit button on the top-right portion of the screen.

  2. Note that a new ProctorU toggle appears under the Details tab in the quiz settings. Turn on ProctorU, as well as the Auto-generated password option below it (recommended).

  3. Configure the other settings on the details page as needed, then select the ProctorU settings tap at the top of the page.

  4. For the majority of exams, the settings under this tab should be left at Medium. The Medium profile applies the default settings to the student exam restrictions. A breakdown of each restriction is listed below.

Browser Tabs: Controls whether test-takers can open other tabs while the exam is active.
Allow copy text and image: Controls whether test-takers can copy and paste information while the exam is active. For exams that allow the use of other applications (e.g. Excel) this option should be set to “Allowed”.
Window sized allowed: Controls whether test-takers can change the size of the exam browser window on the screen. For exams that allow the use of other applications (e.g. Excel) this option should be set to “Resized”.
Application lost focus: Controls whether the active exam window can go out of focus. If restricted, students cannot interact with other applications during the test. If allowed, other applications can be launched and brought to the foreground. For exams that allow the use of other applications (e.g. Excel) this option should be set to “Allowed”.

  5. Below the restriction settings, identify which test-aids are permitted for use during the test. By default, no resources are permitted.

  6. When finished, click the Save button on the bottom right-hand side of the page to save any changes made to both the quiz and ProctorU settings.

  7. Support for Record+ is offered through the Boise State Help Desk. Instructors who use Record+ are advised to post a link to the Record+ Student Support page in the area of their course where tests appear. Please direct students to the information on that page should they contact you to report issues.

Notes

If the ProtorU controls are missing from your quiz settings, check that you have the extension installed, and click it to verify that you are signed in, then refresh the quiz settings page.

Students may not be able to receive immediate help if they contact ProctorU for technical assistance during busy testing periods. For this reason, contacting the Boise State Help Desk is recommended in the student directions (Step 7 above). In the event that a student experiences a technical problem that affects their ability to start or complete the test, a Boise State Staff Member will inform the instructor and work with the student to resolve the issue.
