This article intended for Faculty: In Canvas it is crucial to fill in student grades for all assignments. If this isn’t completed, Canvas Grades could show discrepancies between the “Current Score” “Final Score” and “New Analytics” Grade in Canvas.
This article is meant to demonstrate these differences and recommend a best practice to avoid issues like this.
Current Score
The Canvas “Current Score” reflects only the points from assignments the student has participated in. In Example 1 table below, the student has not submitted 2 assignments. Their score is artificially inflated to 100%.
Example 1 | Unit 1 | Unit 2 | Unit 3 | Unit 4 | Unit 5 | Current Score |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Points Possible | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 30 |
Betty Bronco | 10 | 10 | no submission | no submission | 10 | 30 |
= 30/30 = 100% |
Final Score
The Canvas “Final Score” reflects all possible points from all the assignments, regardless if the student participated. Example 2 table is the same table as above, but with an artificially deflated score.
Example 2 | Unit 1 | Unit 2 | Unit 3 | Unit 4 | Unit 5 | Final Score |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Points Possible | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 50 |
Betty Bronco | 10 | 10 | no submission | no submission | 10 | 30 |
=30/50 = 60% |
