This article is meant to describe what Discussion Summaries do in Canvas Courses, who can see them, and how to turn them off if desired.
Description of Discussion Summaries
Generative AI-powered tool that highlights key themes, common questions, and frequently mentioned ideas within discussion threads, making it easier for educators to gauge student engagement and understanding.
NOTE: Summaries are only seen by Instructors.
Discussion Summaries are Default turned ON in Canvas.
To turn off the Discussion Summary AI Tool
Enter your Canvas course and click on the Settings button on the bottom of the white-right-hand navigation menu.
Click on the Feature Options tab.
Scroll down to Discussion Summary.
Click on the checkmark and select Disabled.
Done! (you do not need to save this change, it is applied automatically)
