Using and Sharing System Instructions

System instructions guide how the AI responds to your prompts. This article summarizes the different types of system instructions and how to:

  • Create,

  • Use, and

  • Share

system instructions from your boisestate.ai account.

Types of System Instructions

Once created, you can add them to any conversation or share them with others so they can use them too.

There are three different types of system instructions:

  • My Instructions (visible only to you, not shared)

  • My Shared (shared by you or to you specifically)

  • Public Instructions (visible to anyone at Boise State to view or use)

You can access all three types from boisestate.ai by selecting the instructions icon (appears as a document) in the left-hand menu then clicking/tapping Manage Instructions. Navigate instructions by selecting the desired tab.

This lesson illustrates different ways to construct instructions for an AI response that meets you where you are at, matches your expertise level, and saves you time.


How to Create System Instructions

  1. Log in to http://boisestate.ai using your Boise State credentials.

  2. Select Use Instructions.

  3. Select Create a System Instruction.

    1. Enter a title and (optional) description.

    2. Enter the instructions the AI assistant should follow.

    3. Save.

  4. Confirm the new instructions are in the My Instructions panel.

Once saved, you can access your instructions from

  • the left-hand menu by clicking/tapping the Instructions tool icon (looks like a hammer).

  • within the Use Instructions accordion.

How to Use System Instructions

Once you have one or more system instructions, you can use them in your AI conversations.

  1. Log in to http://boisestate.ai using your Boise State credentials.

  2. Click/tap the Instructions tool icon or Use Instructions accordion near the bottom of the page.

  3. Select the system instructions you want to use.

  4. Enter your prompt in the prompt panel.

  5. Click/tap the Enter icon (upwards arrow).

The system instructions you selected will guide how the AI responds to your prompt.

Sharing System Instructions

  1. Log in to http://boisestate.ai using your Boise State credentials.

  2. Select the Instructions tools icon (looks like a hammer) in the left-hand menu.

  3. Click/tap Manage Instructions.

  4. Click the Share icon for the instructions you want to share.

    1. Enter Boise State email addresses or make public within the Boise State community.

    2. Select Share System Instruction.

  5. Copy the Sharable Link if you intend to post access in a Canvas course or via email or other methods.

Once shared, your system instructions will also appear under the My Shared tab.

If you opted to make the instructions publicly accessible, they will also appear under the Public Instructions tab.

Sharable links get updated with each edit made to your system instructions. If you opt to post or send sharable links to one or more people, be sure to update the posts or resend the new sharable links so folks are accessing the latest version of your system instructions.

If at any time, you remove a previously shared item, any shared links may result in an error message.
