Summary

This article will describe how you create and edit assignments in Canvas. It will also describe what assignment groups are, how to use them, and how to create them.

Instructions

Assignment Groups

Before creating an assignment, you should choose an assignment group for the new assignment. Groups allow you to organize your assignments in a logical way. Students can filter their assignments page by Canvas suggests using them to organize assignments into their types, e.g. discussions, quizzes, assignments, etc.

To create a new assignment group:

  1. Navigate to the Assignments page using the course navigation menu on the left.
  2. Click the + Group button at the top of the page.
  3. Enter a name and grade percentage (if wanted).
  4. Click Save.

Create an Assignment

  1. Navigate to the Assignments page using the course navigation menu on the left.
  2. Click on the + Assignment button at the top of the page.

You can also create an assignment shell by clicking on the plus icon to the right of an assignment group. This allows you to enter only the basic details of an assignment and save the rest for later.

  3. Enter the assignment's details and click Save or Save and Publish if you're ready to publish the assignment to students.

It is most effective to be detailed when creating assignments, including format and file type expected of students. This prevents surprises in grading later on.

Editing an Assignment
