Summary:

This article explains how instructors can set up their own Canvas assessments to require the use of ProctorU Record+ (, the automated record and review product from ProctorU).

Note

ProctorU Record+ does not currently support the Canvas New Quizzes tool. Exams must be created as Classic Quizzes to use Record+. Support is expected to become available once New Quizzes fully replaces the classic toolat a later time.

Note

ProctorU Record+ has different requirements, setup steps, policies, and support escalation paths than the Live+ service. Instructors should NOT use both services in the same course.

First Time User Setup

  1. If you do not already have one, create a ProctorU instructor account using your Boise State faculty email. If you need to regain access to an old account, try signing in at the portal or using the password reset option.

  2. Install the ProctorU Google Chrome Extension (recommended) or Firefox Extension. Other browsers are not currently supported.

  3. After Installing, click the ProcotrU extension icon in your browser, then click Login.

  4. On the web portal, enter your instructor credentials, enable the Stay Signed In option, then click Login.

  5. Close the ProctorU tab and return to Canvas to set up your exam.

Adding ProctorU Record+ to your Exam

  1. After you have installed the ProctorU extension and signed in with your instructor account, click the intended quiz in Canvas, then click the Edit button on the top-right portion of the screen.

  2. Note that a new ProctorU toggle appears under the Details tab in the quiz settings. Turn on ProctorU, as well as the Auto-generated password option below it (recommended). You may also create your own password if you do not use this option. Do NOT provide the test access code to students. See the notes area at the end of this article.

  4. For the majority of exams, the settings under this tab should be left at Medium. The Medium profile applies the default settings to the student exam restrictions. A breakdown of each restriction is listed below.

Browser Tabs: Controls whether test-takers can open other tabs while the exam is active.
Allow copy text and image: Controls whether test-takers can copy and paste information while the exam is active.

...

  1. If students are expected to copy and paste their work from other applications (e.g. Excel), this option should be set to “Allowed”.
Window sized allowed: Controls whether test-takers can change the size of the exam browser window on the screen. For exams that allow the use of other applications (e.g. Excel) this option should be set to “Resized”.
Application lost focus: Controls whether the active exam window can go out of focus. If restricted, students cannot interact with other applications during the test. If allowed, other applications can be launched and brought to the foreground. For exams that allow the use of other applications (e.g. Excel) this option should be set to “Allowed”.

  2. Below the restriction settings, identify which test-aids are permitted for use during the test. By default, no resources are permitted.

  3. When finished, click the Save button on the bottom right-hand side of the page to save any changes made to both the quiz and ProctorU settings.

  1. Initial technical support for Record+ is offered through the Boise State Help Desk, and if outside of our hours of operations, support needs should be routed to ProctorU. Instructors who use Record+ are advised to post a link to the Record+ Student Support page in the Module area of their course directly above each exam. Please direct students to the information on that page should they contact you for assistance.

Important Notes:

  • Students must have access to a computer with a webcam and microphone to use Record+. This service will not work with the Canvas mobile app on phones and/or tablet devices.

  • Exams do not need to be finalized before you set up Record+. An empty Canvas Quiz can be configured with ProctorU. Questions can be added to exams any time before the start date.

  • Your ProctorU Record+ Exam must use an access code (Canvas refers to exam passwords as “Access Codes”). The ProctorU settings include an option to use an auto-generated access code (Step 2 above). Using the auto-generated code is recommended, but you may also set your own exam access code if you prefer. Do Not provide exam access codes to students. ProctorU works by automatically populating the access code you set (or auto-generate) for students. If you are contacted by a student who is seeing a test password screen, this indicates that they may not have the extension installed, enabled, or signed in. Refer them to the Common Issues page in the provided student directions.

  • If the ProtorU controls are missing from your quiz settings, check that you have the extension installed, and click it to verify that you are signed in, then refresh the quiz settings page. Do need to not change the test access code field without making sure that you can see the ProctorU controls. Your changes will not sync with ProctorU if you are not signed in with the browser extension.

  • Students may not be able to receive immediate help if they contact ProctorU for technical assistance during busy testing periods. For this reason, contacting the Boise State If during Boise State Help Desk hours of operation, the Help Desk is recommended in the student directions (Step 7 above). In the event that a student experiences a technical problem that affects their ability to start or complete the test, a Boise State Staff Member will inform the instructor and work with the student to resolve the issue.

...

  • If the Help Desk is closed or if students are not able to get their issue resolved with the Boise State Help Desk they will need to contact ProctorU Support. Students can use the Live Chat feature within their ProctorU account. They can also connect with ProctorU Support online, call +1-855-772-8678, or submit a request to ProctorU support.
