This article demonstrates how to request a Canvas Course from Middleware 2.0. This course site has live enrollment updates.

  • Select the Term you wish to request a course site for from the upper right-hand corner of the screen near the Search and Refresh Buttons.

  • The courses you are listed as an Instructor for in Peoplesoft will automatically display on the screen.

  • For a Single Course Site, select the blue +Create Course button to the right of the particular course.

  • You will now be walked through the Course Creation Process, see steps listed below.

  • Select Bulk Single Site from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

  • Select the Term you wish to request a course site for from the upper right-hand corner of the screen near the Search and Refresh Buttons.

  • The courses you are listed as an Instructor for in Peoplesoft will automatically display on the screen.

  • For the Bulk Single Site Request, Available Courses are listed in a column on the left. Select the Courses you wish to create Single Course Sites for, they will appear in the right-hand Selected Courses.

    • Note: The purpose of this tool is for instructors who have a bunch of single course sites they need to manage each semester. This tool will save you time!

  • Select Next.

  • You will be taken to the Course Info Tab

  • For a Merged Course Site select the blue + Create Merged Site button in the upper left-hand side of the list of courses.

  • Select the Term you wish to request a course site for from the upper right-hand corner of the screen near the Search and Refresh Buttons.

  • The courses you are listed as an Instructor for in Peoplesoft will automatically display on the left-hand side of in a column titled “Available Courses.”

  • Select two or more courses to merge, they will automatically appear in the right-hand column titled “Selected Courses.”

  • You will now be walked through the Course Creation Process, see steps listed below.

Course Creation Process:

Course Information

  • The automatically generated course name will be listed first, change it if you like (Pro-Tip: Add the Section Number or note if the course is merged, etc..)

    • Select your preferred Course Availability:

      • Unavailable - This setting will create the Canvas Course site in an “Unpublished” state. When you are ready to make the course available to students you will need to “Publish” the course from the course home page and uncheck the “Restrict students from viewing course before term start date” check box on the course settings page

      • Available to Students - This setting will create the Canvas Course site in a “Published” state.

      • Start of Term - This setting will create the Canvas Course Site in a “Published” state initially, but is not available to students until the first day of the term.

      • Date - This setting will create the Canvas Course Site in a “Published” state but the course will not be available to students until the date selected.

    • (Optional) Course ID to Copy From

      • IMPORTANT - you must be listed as an Instructor in the course you are copying from.

      • Enter the Canvas Course ID (Also Called SIS ID) from a course that you would like to copy content from.

      • Option 1) For finding the Canvas Course ID (Also Called SIS ID) is to use the unique number from the URL of the course’s Canvas Home Page.

Option 2) Look in the Settings area of a Canvas Course Site

  • Select Next in the lower right-hand corner of the page.

  • To add users to your course site.

    • If you are Bulk Requesting Single Course Sites, this is an opportunity to add users to all of the courses being created at one time. This is the only opportunity to do this. (Example: creating 10 courses with the same Teaching Assistant in each course, add the Teaching Assistant here and that users will be added to each of the 10 courses.)

  • Type in the person’s Boise State Username or Student/Employee ID Number.

  • Select the Canvas Course Role you wish the person to have:

    • Teacher

    • TA (Teaching Assistant)

    • Designer

    • Observer

    • Course Administrator

  • Click on the orange plus symbol to finalize the addition.

  • Repeat for as many users that you need to.

    • To remove a user, select the small red trash can symbol next to their name.

  • Select Next in the lower right-hand corner of the page when you are done.

Additional Options

  • If you would like to receive an email notification when the course is ready, check the box on the far right of the screen.

  • Select Submit.

Almost Done!

The next screen might take a few minutes to process. You will eventually see a confirmation page.

  • Be Aware that the Canvas Course Site can take up to 30 minutes to be created and show up on Canvas.

  • Below is a screenshot of a confirmation page directing users to go to the Home Page to monitor their course creation progress. The page also confirms the details of the newly created course site including letting you know the new Course Site ID.

  • On the Home page view the status of the course. Refresh the page with the orange refresh button on the right-hand side of the screen.

    • Status Message will eventually show as “Ready” and this is when the course will be visible on Canvas.

    • Once the course is “Ready” the Instructor can edit the Course or Add/Remove users by selecting the Edit Course button.

Instructions

  1. Navigate to https://middleware.boisestate.edu and log in with your Boise State credentials.

  2. If you have multiple Middleware roles, be sure to switch to the appropriate role before proceeding. Click theoptions button in the top right-hand corner, then click Switch Roles.

  3. Click the Term Selection Field [2] and select a term to see your assigned courses.

  4. Click the +CREATE COURSE button [3] next to the desired class to create a Canvas course site. If you don’t see the course you need, ensure that you are the listed instructor for the course in PeopleSoft.

  5. On the COURSE INFO tab, you can customize the course name [4] and set the course availability date [5]. See Middleware Course Availability Settings for additional details about availability options.

  6. If you wish to copy the content from an old course, use the optional course copy field [6]. Enter the Canvas SIS Course ID of the source course. You must have either the Teacher or the Course Administrator role in the source course. Ask the course owner to add you to the course if needed. Click the Next button to proceed [7].

Note

If the course you copy included quizzes with Respondus Lockdown Browser or ProctorU enabled, these often appear in the new course with the expected “ … requires Lockdown Browser …” or “ … ProctorU …” in the quiz title, but the settings do not copy into the new course.

When copying Respondus Lockdown Browser or ProctorU quizzes, take the following steps in the new Canvas course:

  1. Open each quiz.

  2. Confirm or reset the Respondus and ProctorU settings.

Note

If the course you copy included assignments using an LTI, validate the integration in the new Canvas course and confirm any corresponding assignments in the new course.

  1. On the MANUAL ENROLLMENTS tab, you can add other users to the course. Enter an Employee ID or a Boise State Username, then click the + button [8] to add users. Click Next to proceed [9].

  2. On the ADDITIONAL OPTIONS tab, you can request to receive an email notification when the course is ready [10]. Click SUBMIT to create the course site [11].

Note: If you decide to import content from another course after completing this process, you can use Canvas' native content import functionality. See the Canvas to Canvas Course Import (course copy) for more information.
