Summary

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a secure browser for taking tests in Canvas. This article explains how to install Lockdown and launch an exam.

Lockdown prevents printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during the exam. Exams that use Respondus Lockdown cannot be accessed with a standard web browser.

Instructions

  1. If you have not yet done so, download and install Lockdown Browser from this link: https://download.respondus.com/Lockdown/download.php?id=497143110

Note

Mac users may be prompted to grant permission for Lockdown Browser to restrict access to certain features on your computer while you take an exam. Follow the on-screen prompts to grant the necessary permissions.

Taking A Test

  1. Close all open programs.

  2. Locate the “Lockdown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. (For Mac users, find “Lockdown Browser” in the LaunchPad or your Applications folder.

  3. Lockdown may prompt you to close specific programs that are running on your computer (e.g., instant messaging, other browsers, etc.). You can close these programs by choosing “Close Applications” on the prompt message.

  4. The default landing page for Lockdown Browser is the My Boise State portal. Log into your account and access Canvas. Navigate to the test within the course and select Begin Exam.

  5. The test will then start (once a test has been started with Respondus Lockdown Browser, you cannot exit until the Submit button is clicked).
