Blackboard to Blackboard

If the student took an Incomplete in their Spring 2021 Blackboard Course and they intend to Complete the Incomplete during Summer 2021, we recommend you keep using your Blackboard Course to finish up with the student.

Blackboard is available to Boise State until September 2021.

Here is the Knowledge Article on how to do that: Student Complete an Incomplete (Blackboard)

Preserve Student’s Past Work and Grades:

Once you have identified that a student is likely taking an Incomplete, you can work ahead to make the situation easy and stress-free:

  • Preserve your Blackboard Gradebook by exporting and saving as an excel file (Work Offline).

  • If you know your student is taking an Incomplete during this transition, download submitted assignments from the Blackboard Grade Center and save them to your computer or your Boise State Google Drive. This way if there are any questions about the student’s work or grades later, all the information is easily available.

Create the Incomplete Section

  • Log into Canvas.

  • Go to the Canvas Course Site the student is Completing an Incomplete in.

    • Although the course is closed the rest of the class, we are going to create a special Section in the course for the student to finish their work.

  • From the Course Navigation Menu, select Settings.

  • Select the Section Tab.

  • In the text box below, type in Incomplete.

  • Select the blue + Section button.

  • You will now see the new Incomplete Section listed, click on Incomplete.

...

  • On the new page, select Edit Sections from the menu on the right-hand side of the screen.

  • The Section Name is already “Incomplete.”

  • SIS ID - don’t change.

  • Add start/end dates to make this course available for the student who is Completing the Incomplete.

  • Check the box Users can only participate in the course between these dates.

  • Select Update Section.

Lockdown the Original Course Section:

  • Your class already default has a section that you are working in, this will have your class name.

  • Click on the Section with your class name in it.

  • Add start/end dates to make this course available for the student who is Completing the Incomplete.

  • Check the box Users can only participate in the course between these dates. This is the step that stops students who have already completed the class from seeing the course.

Add Student to Incomplete Section

  • Select People from the Course Layout Menu

  • Locate the student who is Completing the Incomplete.

  • Select the ellipses next to the student’s name.

  • Select Edit Sections.

  • A new screen will pop up, type in Incomplete in the search box.

  • Select the Incomplete from the drop-down menu.

  • Select Update.

    • You don't need to remove the student from his or her original section to have them enrolled

      in the section.

...

  • Make sure all work the student needs to complete is set as Available for this student to access.

  • Example for Assignments:

    • Go to Assignments in the Course Layout Menu.

    • Click on the Assignment title, select the gray Edit button (near the title of the assignment).

    • Two easy options:

      • If the assignment is set to “Everyone” and the dates are open to the new availability times, the student in the Incomplete section can access it.

      • Another option is to add the student or section independently with special availability dates.
