  1. Change the exam’s content link description - update the exam description to include the following message for students:

This exam must be taken with Respondus LockDown Browser. Please download it here: https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=497143110

If you have not used Respondus Lockdown before, see this page for directions on how to take your exams with this tool: https://boisestate.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LTS/pages/757137480/Taking+An+Exam+With+Respondus+LockDown+Browser

A screenshot of the Exam Content Link Description field in Blackboard. A massage is written instructing students to download Respondus LockDown Browser from the provided link.

  2. Make the exam available to students - the setting to make an exam available should always be set to Yes. Otherwise, students will not be able to access the test.

In the Blackboard test options page, the radio button next to 'make available to students' is set to 'yes'Image RemovedIn the Blackboard test options page, the radio button next to 'make available to students' is set to 'yes'Image Added

  3. Enable force completion (recommended) - In an un-proctored setting, enabling the force Completion setting is recommended to prevent students from being able to leave the exam and return to it later.

In the Blackboard test options page, the checkbox next to 'force completion' is enabled.

  4. Set an exam timer (recommended) - turn on the auto-submit setting. This will end and grade the exam when the timer expires. These settings are recommended but not required.

In the Blackboard test options page, an exam timer is set and the auto-submit setting is turned on.

  5. Set the availability window - set the desired dates in the Display After and the Display Until fields. Set the desired times next to each one.

In the Blackboard test options page, the 'Display after' and the 'Display until' settings are both populated and enabled.

  6. Do not set a password - leave the password field empty, and the checkbox disabled. When you configure Lockdown Browser, a password will be automatically assigned in this field.

In the Blackboard test options page, the password field is clear and the setting is unchecked.

  7. Apply extended time accommodations - If your exam is timed, remember to add extended time exceptions for any students who qualify.

In the Blackboard test options page, an example student is added under 'test availability exceptions'. The student's timer is set for 120 mins, and the auto-submit option is enabled.

  8. Do not enable due date restriction - Do not enable the setting for restricting the exam after the due date. This setting will prevent some make-up and accommodated testers from being able to access the test. The availability window (Step 4) is sufficient for controlling students' access to the exam.

In the Blackboard test options page, the Due Date field is unused, and the due date restriction below it is disabled. This is the correct configuration.

  9. Under Show Test Results And Feedback To Students, it is recommended that you set both the feedback fields to Choose. This will prevent access to exam content after submission (including the question text, students' responses, and correct/incorrect answers). Students can still see their overall score in their Grade Center. However, if possible, going over the test should be done with the instructor rather than allowing access to the exam material.

  10. Configure Lockdown Browser for this test - With the test settings configured, you can now enable Lockdown browser for this exam from the Respondus Dashboard in your course. You can find step by step directions on this page.

Note

The following settings should NOT be modified in the test options page after enabling Respondus: The exam name, the setting for open the test in a new window, and the password should not be changed after you enable Respondus Lockdown.
